Human factors:
Management of a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)
SELECT THE MODULE BELOW
In this learning we will consider how human factors can influence the management of a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). The science of human factors encompasses a range of topics including design ergonomics as well as human behaviours, often referred to as non-technical skills. Here we focus on the ‘human’ in human factors: how to get the best out of ourselves and our colleagues, in order to get the best outcomes for our patients.
The challenge for paramedics arriving at SCA is to rapidly form a high functioning resuscitation team with colleagues, sometimes those with whom they have never worked before, as well as with community responders and other health professionals.
Addressing human factors in resuscitation scenarios with multiple ambulance crews requires a comprehensive approach that includes training, clear protocols, effective leadership, and a culture that promotes communication, teamwork and mutual support.
By focusing on these areas, the performance of the resuscitation team can be optimised, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes.
Excellent teamwork is key to improving survival rates.
There are two distinct modules, which should be completed in order.
The first module allows you to observe the incident in an interactive 360° environment. Effectively, you are a ‘fly on the wall’.
In the second module you will learn more about the characters and explore key learning points within the context of the scenario. You will also have the opportunity to hear some members of the team debrief following the incident.
